A story about the complexities of immigration, discrimination and cultural roots told through spoken narrative, music and dance
“looking for the difference while searching for what makes us the same.” — Rakesh Sukesh
While teaching in Tallin, Estonia, choreographer and dancer Rakesh Sukesh had a brief, random encounter with a camera that changed everything. The encounter lasted just four or five seconds, but it had a lasting effect on Rakesh’s relationship to his dance colleagues in Europe, to the students he teaches around the world, to his friends and lovers, and to his own understanding of who he is, as a person and as an artist.
because i love the diversity is Rakesh’s attempt to tell the story of what happened because of the encounter. It is a story he tells with words, through his body, and through the powerful semi-improvisational, trance-like movement technique that makes him such an in-demand artist and teacher across the world.
because i love the diversity (this micro-attitude, we all have it) premiered at the 2024 PuSh International Performing Arts Festival in Vancouver, Canada.
